What is Scrum?

Scrum is a popular Agile framework for product development. It focuses on delivering value faster by working in short sprints. Cross-functional teams consist of a Scrum Master, a Product Owner and a Development Team. Together, they deliver a new, working version of the product each sprint, which can be tested in the marketplace and with stakeholders. A Scrum board visually displays the status of tasks, allowing everyone to track progress.

The Scrum Board

The power of Scrum

The Scrum board helps teams work in sprints and is divided into three columns: to do, doing and done. Tasks start in to do, are moved to doing, and end in done using post-its.

Scrum focuses on delivering value quickly and improving the quality and effectiveness of teams. Working in sprints allows teams to continuously gather feedback and make adjustments based on market trends. A shared Sprint Goal provides consistency and clear direction, which is covered in detail in our Scrum Training courses.

Coordination across teams

A Development Team usually consists of three to nine professionals, but sometimes a larger team is needed for bigger projects. In such cases, Scrum or Scrums comes into the picture. This involves assembling several separate teams to work on the same project without increasing the size of the original team.

Each team appoints a representative to participate in Scrum of Scrums meetings. These representatives coordinate collaboration between the teams and ensure a unified approach to the project.

Scrum Values

To perform optimally as a Scrum Team, certain core values are essential. These are also called the Scrum Values: Focus, Respect, Openness, Commitment and Focus.

Puntsgewijs

  1. Focus

Focus means working with clear, specific goals, making obstacles disappear faster.

  2. Respect

Make sure the team is balanced by knowing everyone's strengths and weaknesses. This creates respect and allows for personal response.

  3. Openness

Openness and transparency ensure that feedback for improvement is possible at all times.

  4. Commitment

Commitment means setting clear goals so that each team member knows exactly what their responsibility is.

  5. Courage

Being honest with everyone on your team requires courage, as does holding others accountable.

Scrum meetings

Within Agile working with the Scrum framework, several meetings take place. These meetings provide structure and are aimed at ensuring quality. All Scrum meetings are timeboxed, have a specific goal and contribute to the delivery of a working product.

Sprint Planning

During Sprint Planning, the Product Owner explains what tasks or User Stories are on the Product Backlog so that everyone understands them. Then the Development Team chooses which User Stories they will pick up, divides them into manageable subtasks of no more than one day and makes a plan of action. The defined subtasks are placed on the Scrumboard under “to do.

Daily Stand-up

The Daily Stand-up takes place daily at the same time and lasts a maximum of 15 minutes. During this meeting, the team discusses what is planned for the next 24 hours.

Sprint Review

At the end of each Sprint, the Sprint Review takes place. At this meeting, all stakeholders are present to provide feedback. This feedback is used to improve the Product Backlog. Based on the Product Backlog, tasks for the next sprints are determined.

Sprint Retrospective

The Sprint Retrospective is always held after the Sprint Review. This meeting discusses what went well, what can be improved and what can be done differently to improve the process and avoid problems. The Sprint Retrospective is essential for forming an effective team and contributes to continuous improvement.

The Scrum Guide

The Scrum Framework

Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, the creators of the Scrum framework, have summarized its guidelines in the Scrum Guide. In it, Scrum is described in detail, including the Scrum Team, Scrum meetings and Scrum values.
