During the recent PI event at a major government client, our team opted for a fresh and visual approach during the review session for the past quarter. Instead of the usual slides and presentations, we used LEGO® as a tool to visualize challenges.

Although it wasn’t an official LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® session, using LEGO as a facilitation tool worked surprisingly well to get the conversation going and increase engagement.

In the team session, we literally used LEGO to build a visual representation of the main obstacles we face as a team. This not only provided a space to address these challenges openly and transparently but also stimulated interactive discussions about who could take on which role in finding a solution. The power of visuals and tangibility made it easier to clearly map out the current situation and the necessary actions.

The setup had multiple goals:

  • Encourage transparency and openness about what’s causing friction within the team
  • Visualize obstacles to arrive at concrete action more quickly
  • Foster team discussions from a different perspective
  • And above all: create a creative, impactful experience that goes beyond the standard PowerPoint presentation

And it worked. The session was very well received by participants at the PI Day. Not only did it generate valuable insights and foster shared ownership, but it also put our team firmly on the map. By choosing a different approach to Agile work and reflection, we demonstrated just how powerful visual facilitation with LEGO can be, even without an official methodology.
